Lake
Garnett Constructed by Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's, Lake Garnett has a surface area of over 55 acres, with surrounding North Lake Park providing an array of recreational facilities. Lake Garnett was the site of the first National Sports Car Association race ever held in the midwest. Held between 1959 and 1972, later races attracted over one hundred racers and tens of thousands of spectators. Anderson County Courthouse Dedicated July 4, l902, the courthouse was designed by George P. Washburn and depicts Romanesque architecture. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the focal point of the town square. The courthouse is open weekdays, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. One of Garnett's most popular festivals, Square Fair, is held annually the Saturday before Mother's Day (second Saturday in May), and the Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade circles the courthouse on its annual parade route, held the Saturday following Thanksgiving. "The Square" Surrounding the Anderson County Courthouse, "the square"as residents call it, is a collection of graceful structures built in the late 1800's which house clothing and gift stores, antique shops, offices, banks and eating establishments. |
The Walker Art
Collection In memory of his mother, Maynard Walker's donation is of mostly early twentieth century American paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings, including works by John Steuart Curry, Edouard Manet and Jean Baptiste Corot. The Mary Bridget McAuliffe Walker Art Collection is housed in the Dorothy Archer Room in the Garnett Public Library. Hours are: Anderson County

Harris House Built in 1888 by Peter Brandt, the Victorian style house was donated to the Anderson County Historical Society by the Dr. C.B. Harris family. Refurbished in 1986, the house can be seen by appointment (785) 867-2966.

Prairie Spirit Rail
Trail Phase 3 of the 50-mile trail (Ottawa to Iola, Kansas) for hiking and bicycling is complete. The Prairie Spirit Rail Trail officially opened March 30, 1996 and is currently 33 miles. Inside Garnett's city limits the surface is asphalt. The Prairie Spirit treks through the Garnett city limits, passing by both Crystal Lake and Lake Garnett. Nostalgic streetlights, ornamental trees, flowers and native grasses align the trail. www.prairiespirittrail.org Santa Fe Depot The depot was renovated in 1996 and serves as a resting
place for trail users and tourist information center. Picnic

and trail lounge.
